PhD Researcher to analyse the impact of pesticides on the microbiome of Malaysian Macaques

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is looking for a PhD Researcher to analyse the impact of pesticides on the microbiome of Malaysian Macaques.

The job

In the framework of a joint PhD project in iDIV the UFZ (Leipzig) is seeking an enthusiastic PhD Researcher to analyse the impact of oil palm plantation use on the gut microbiome of Malaysian Macaques. The change in land use in Malaysia brings the Malaysian Macaques to use palm plantations as a habitat where they hunt rats and are exposed to pesticides. This project aims to reveal the impact of pesticides and altered habitats on the microbiome and changes in the microbiome-host interaction in these animals.

Your tasks

  • Observe the group structure and group behaviour of one selected group of Macaques in Malaysia;
  • Sample faeces and urine samples from this group;
  • Analyse the pesticide concentration from urine and determine the microbial composition from faeces samples;
  • Evaluate the results and prepare scientific publications and present them at scientific conferences.

Your profile

  • M.Sc degree (or near completion) in biochemistry, microbiology, biology or related fields
  • Experience with field work on macaques, especially in Malaysia
