RPC opportunity on Mosquito Control

Bsssssss…..You think mosquitos are annoying? Come join the team “Community Ecology & Ecotoxicology” to investigate environmentally friendly mosquito control strategies in the scope of a Research Project Course (RPC).

Mosquito taxonomy: Determination of (tropical?) mosquito species and mosquito trap catches in the Upper Rhine valley

Time period: winter 2017/ spring 2018

Mosquito control in the Upper Rhine valley looks back on more than 40 years of intensive biocide applications in ecologically valuable areas along the river Rhine. Up to now, the goal of mosquito control is the reduction of nuisance occurring after flooding events. Nevertheless, some tropical mosquito species arrived in the southern parts of Germany and may be found in the Upper Rhine valley as well. In your RPC, you will work on mosquito samples collected in the year 2017. You are going to determine individuals on a species level and learn more about their regional and local distribution. Your work can be easily expanded to a master thesis in the summer 2018 where you can benefit from your determination skills.
