European Commission Scientific Trainees (JRC)

The European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) seeks to recruit scientific trainees in different thematic areas to start in March 2025. The place of traineeship can be one of the following JRC sites: Geel (Belgium), Ispra (Italy), Karlsruhe (Germany), Petten (the Netherlands) or Seville (Spain).

As the science and knowledge service of the European Commission, the JRC provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society.

Thematic areas

The JRC science and knowledge activities cover a variety of areas, including agriculture and food security, health, industry and space, energy, natural resources, mobility, environment and climate change, nuclear safety and security, and crisis management, among others. The scheme focuses on candidates having a strong scientific background. Depending on the project, the trainee will be expected to perform desktop work and/or laboratory tasks. The next traineeship session will start in March 2025 and will run for a fixed period of 5 months.

Areas of interest might be (3) Modelling, data & quantitative data for spatial analysis.(11) Regulatory Science – food and feed safety; analytical chemistry; medical devices. (13) Biodiversity, Ecosystem services and Natural Resources. (14) Climate Change, sustainable transport & air pollution. (15) Circular Economy, Life Cycle Assessment & Sustainable Development Goals.

Eligibility requirements

  • Nationality: open to nationals of Member States of the European Union and of countries associated with the Research Framework Programmes. The recruitment of candidates from non-Member States can entail additional administrative requirements.
  • Degree: open to university graduates who have completed at least a standard 3-year higher education degree within the last 5-years. This includes candidates who are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree or PhD programme and are preparing a thesis.
  • Languages: all candidates must have a thorough knowledge of at least English (C1 level). Candidates from EU Member States must have a thorough knowledge of at least two Community languages (one of which should be English).
  • Previous experiences: candidates who have benefited from any kind of traineeship within a European institution, or who have had any kind of employment within a European institution for more than six weeks are not eligible.

The basic monthly allowance in 2024 is between € 1.306,16 and € 1.581,292. A trainee whose place of recruitment is less than 50km from the JRC site where the traineeship will take place is awarded half of the basic allowance
