The Department of Environmental Science at Stockholm University has an open Postdoc position on the Biodiversa+ project DESTRESS (DEciphering temporal trends and safe operating spaces for river biodiversity within the context of multiple STRESSors)
General Information
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. The start date is in September, or as per agreement. The employment includes salary for full-time work and social benefits.
Project description
The postdoc project is part of the Biodiversa+ project DESTRESS (DEciphering temporal trends and safe operating spaces for river biodiversity within the context of multiple STRESSors), funded by the EU and national funding agencies.
The overarching goal of DESTRESS is to provide guidance and actionable knowledge needed to balance freshwater needs between riverine biodiversity and human society. Data analysis tools will be used to investigate links between biodiversity and major stressors such as hydrology and pollution by synthetic chemicals. Additionally, a co-creation process involving water managers, relevant authorities and other stakeholders will be used to develop a Safe Operating Space to support evidence-based implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.
Responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow will specifically contribute to two parts of the DESTRESS project:
First, you will investigate links between land use (e.g. wastewater treatment plants, agriculture, population density etc) and the impact on hydrology and the level of contamination by synthetic chemicals in European rivers. This task involves handling and analysing big data.
Second, you will contribute to the development and scientific analysis of a process to ensure and facilitate regulatory and management implementation of the outcomes of DESTRESS. Throughout the project, you will work closely together with other members of the DESTRESS interdisciplinary research team of ecologists, hydrologists, environmental chemists, environmental scientists and social scientists as well as with various stakeholders. You are expected to contribute to and lead the writing of scientific manuscripts.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree in environmental science or equivalent, no more than 3 years old (special circumstances apply).
- Documented experience of data analysis tools and community/stakeholder engagement.
- Experience with science-to-policy processes and knowledge on European legislative frameworks associated to biodiversity and water management, as well as on biodiversity measures and drivers of change is considered an advantage.
- Experience of work in inter-, and transdisciplinary research will be of benefit.
- Working ability in R
- Statistical knowledge and experience in multivariate modelling
- Experience with using GIS (geographical information systems)
- Strong communication skills in English, in both speech and writing.
