The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) is hiring a PhD researcher in microbial community ecotoxicology as part of their stream biofilm research.
The aim of the project is to investigate how diatom species that compose biofilms respond to pesticide pollution in Swiss watercourses and to identify taxa that are specifically sensitive or tolerant to these pesticides. Ultimately, these taxa will be used to develop a specific diatom index for pesticides that can be implemented in practice for evaluating the ecological status of streams. These questions will be addressed by combining experimental channel studies under controlled conditions, field surveys and computational modelling approaches.
