Prof. Dr. Ralf B. Schäfer of Uni Koblenz-Landau will give a talk on the current research and debates surrounding insect decline, with focus on the key drivers, trends among aquatic versus terrestrial insects, the role of pollutants, and mitigation measures.
Will insects disappear in a few decades, as major newspapers headlined (Guardian, 10.2.2019)? What is the scientific evidence for the insect decline and what are the consequences?
The talk describes several key studies from recent years and provides an insight into the complexity of the debate. In addition, the talk will identify some of the causes of the observed decline in some groups of insects. In particular, Ralf Schäfer will discuss suggested differences in the trends between aquatic and terrestrial insects and will feature a short section on the role of pollutants. Finally, mitigation measures for individuals and society are discussed and insect mortality is placed within the overarching theme of species extinction.
