Every Summer Semester, Ecotox Master students do a 2-month internship or AMEO (Applied Module at an External Organization). Today, Lilija Koval tells us about her AMEO experience at the Paris Institute of Ecology and Environmental Sciences (iEES).
Over the summer, I completed an 11-week internship at the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Sciences Paris (iEES) at Sorbonne University. This experience provided me with practical research skills and a clearer understanding of the academic environment in France.
My primary focus during the internship was on developing and optimizing a model to test the effects of endocrine disruptors and nanoplastics on Spodoptera littoralis, a moth species commonly used in ecotoxicology. These projects allowed me to work independently on various aspects of research, from experiment design to problem-solving, with guidance from experienced colleagues.
Aside from lab work, I attended several academic events, including a scientific congress in Versailles and the Olfaction Days/ Scientific Presentations in Paris. These opportunities allowed me to observe how current research is presented and discussed within the scientific community. I also attended a PhD defense, which gave me insights into the level of detail and commitment required in doctoral research.
After my internship, I compiled a final report that included statistical analyses of my findings and presented a summary of my work to my supervisors. This process helped reinforce my understanding of scientific research and improved my data analysis and presentation skills.
The internship also offered a good overview of how research institutions operate in France and allowed me to enhance my French language skills, which benefited my work environment.
Overall, the internship at Sorbonne University provided me with valuable experience in ecotoxicology and exposure to the broader academic processes in a French university setting.
